Your Opinion

What should be the agenda of President Pervez Musharraf's visit to America?

Views must be focused and to the point to avoid unnecessary editing and should not exceed 250 words. No views without the full name and address will be entertained.

I think that General Musharraf should talk on formation of some kind of Anti-Terrorist Act/Joint Union. Both countries should work on eliminating the root-cause of Islamic fundamentalism in the country. On that front, I believe, US should provide Pakistan with enough funds to upgrade its present police/ law & order authorities. Pakistani Police should be dissolved and reorganized according to modern needs using modern scientific/professional skills/facilities. This would virtually wipe out not only terrorism but would also help Pakistan establish a better law & order situation.

President Musharraf should listen to the world opinion on terrorism. Hence, his agenda should be to get help from America and other countries in fighting a true fight against terrorism. If Pakistan gets $ 2 billion or some trade agreements in it's favor, it won't help unless it cleans itself internally. It may be just a stop gap situation. I am Indian and I do not have anything against Pakistan. With this in my mind I believe President Musharraf should not be asking any favor other than the money spent on logistic support for the war.

President Musharraf should convince and must make it clear to the American government and people that the Kashmiris are not terrorists and they are freedom fighters and there is state terrorism going in held Kashmir. Furthermore, the Kashmir issue should be solved by the UN resolutions.

America must return our money for F-16 fighter planes and the remaining sanctions against Pakistan should be lifted.

President Musharraf should:

1. Ask US for assistance, aid, and help in Education, Medicine, infrastructure, and Technological development. Process and information technology is a must.

2. Ask the US government to arrest and repatriate the corrupt politicians, civil and military elite because they know about the assets of these people in USA and Europe.

Pakistan should ask America to solve the Kashmir issue, ask for economical AID and give us F-16 fighter planes.

How US can help Mr. Musharraf wipe out Jihadi terrorism, and help Pakistan
Army leave governing business to freely elected politicians.

The agenda should include:

Syed R Ghani
Chicago, USA

In my view, President Musharraf should discuss the following three issues:

1 - Terrorism

2 - Kashmir

3 - Economy

M. Ramzan

President should ask for trade rather than aid. Although, EU has already granted more quotas and duty free access to Pakistani textile goods into its territories, the US is yet to announce such initiatives of allowing better market access. Such moves will bring in fresh investment in the economy and create more job opportunities for the masses.

President Musharraf's agenda should include:

Syed Ahmad Najaf
Holland

President Musharraf should talk on:

1. The issue of held Kashmir

2. The atrocities and human rights violations in held Kashmir by India

3. The geographical and political importance of Pakistan to USA

In my opinion, General Pervez Musharraf must have two points in his agenda on the top of the list:

1. Kashmir issue
2. Improvement of our economical and business conditions
Rehana Hussain

President Musharraf should try to convince America that the Mujahideen fighting are freedom fighters and are not terrorists regardless whatever India say. He should also bring a point about the current situation of Pakistan.

President of Pakistan must get support/write off on:

1-Resolution of the Kashmir issue with India

2-Get all loans write off

3-Support in economic trade with the US

4-Delivary of F-16 fighter planes

5-Resolution of peace in the middle east especially withdrawing of US forces from Saudi Arabia

6-Technology transfer to Pakistan

7-Investment in high-tech Industries in Pakistan
Mohammad Manzar Husain
USA

General Musharraf needs to concentrate on educating existing political leaderships in the country, which is the only way to progress for Pakistan.
Brijesh Patel

Security of Pakistan should be at the top of agenda.

President Musharraf should:

1. Convince the USA that Pakistan will be free of all terrorists - both external and internal.

2. Seek help from America to make Pakistan a truly democratic, secular and prosperous state.

3. Seek the presence of US personnel in Pakistan for medium term to give him the strength and support to control the elements that tend to subvert the peace in South East Asia.

There are number of points which can be included in the agenda:

1. If US want peace in the South Asian Region, then US mediation along with its allies on the flashing point is a must.

2. Due to the US Customs policies, Pakistani exporters are facing great difficulties in clearing the goods within specified period of time. This has not only let down Pakistani exporters, who had suffered heavy losses, but on the other hand Pakistan also lost the foreign exchange, which was suppose to receive after the sale proceeds.

3. There is a need to enhance trade relations between the two countries and this can be done when both the countries would exchange frequent trade delegations.

4. Issuance of US visa from Consulate General of Karachi had been discontinued from March 1995. America do not want to resume its visa service from Karachi, as generally it is believed that this is due to "security reasons". After the September 11th attacks on WTC and Pentagon, the security risk of issuing US visas from Karachi seems to an irrelevant term. Thus, America should commence issuing visas from its Consulate Office in Karachi, which will also boost US trade in Pakistan.

5. President Musharraf should also take up the matter of detained Pakistanis, who are detained in various US jails after the September 11th attacks.

President Musharraf’s agenda should be:

N. M. Abbasi
Lusaka, Zambia

During his visit to USA, President Musharraf should:

1. Extensively give interview on TV and explain to the American public the true nature of Kashmir struggle i.e. it is not a religious war, but a freedom struggle by oppressed people, not unlike the America's freedom struggle against the British;

2. Appeal to the sense of justice and fair-play of the Americans

3. Explain the brutalities and violation of rights of the Kashmiris by the Indians

4. Show the geo-strategic and political importance of Pakistan to USA

All Pakistanis and friends of Pakistan welcome the President and wish him success on his tour!
Syed Abdulhaq Kashmiri
NY, USA

President Musharraf should focus on:

1. US mediation on the Kashmir issue without which this issue will never be resolved

2. Highly sophisticated defence supplies in view of the recently made promises to India by the US

3. Economic packages instead of begging for financial help
Moosa Pervez

President Musharraf must focus on the Kashmir issue and ask for America’s help like Pakistan helped America for taking stand against terrorism.
Waqar Majoka
Toronto, Canada

During his visit, General Musharraf should:

1) force the US to withdraw its military and intelligence personnel from the country because Pakistan is on its way to becoming another Saudi Arabia soon if these people stay in our country

2) force the US to support Pakistan in the Kashmir issue ahead of its economic interests with India since President Musharraf has done an excellent job in putting India on the back-foot time and again since September 11, 2001.
