The recent Indian decision, to me, is a prelude to war. A war will not be in India's national interest. It may lead to unity between the militants and the Pakistan army. This would be a setback for India. A confrontation between the Jehadis and the Pakistani Establishment would suit the Indian interests much better.

India and Pakistan cannot afford another war. These two countries must sit down and discuss the mutual issues. Going for a devastating war hardly makes any sense for both countries.

I guess no side in South Asia wants war. Talks should be held to resolve the issues.

I think India is going way too far. If India has any evidence against Pakistan, it should submit it to a third country for a fair decision. This would be the right way to handle the current crisis.

India’s decision is right because she had no other option. The other option could be to go for a full-scale war, but it’s not an option at all worth to consider.

India has been trying to get world's attention by producing aggression-provoking dramas of self-inflicted wounds since Sept. 11. On the basis of those worst type of events, she had taken steps that indicates possibilities of war unilaterally in the region that is already tension-dreiven. It does not serve any peace or development-oriented interest of a secular state like India. Still, there is room to resolve the tension by dialogue and let the people of two countries live peacefully.

India’s recent decision with regard to recall of its High Commission to Pakistan and suspension of trains and bus services is no way a prelude to war.

Pakistan now needs to come up from the choices and that too should be a matching response and favourable to positive condition.

It’s a right decision taken by India. But this may not be a prelude to war. For, India is just putting pressure on President Musharraf to see whether he can rein in the militant outfits. If that does not happen, India may put some more pressure like revoking MFN status and cancellation of the Indus water treaty, etc.
Srinivas Nrupendra

I think it is the right move. Pakistan must now realize the gravity of the current situation so to correct its policies and put an end to the reigns of militants once and for all. The world knows that dialogue cannot solve the problem.

I greatly appreciate Fardeen's remarks to me whose views represent the majority of the Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC.

Instead of mired by the extremists forces, it is time for the common people and intellectuals of both the countries India and Pakistan to wake up and work together to live in peace, so that our scant resources can be diverted to the poverty alleviation and other developmental projects, rather than spending on the
military.

The Indian decision is not a prelude to war. There will be no war; no government wants its economy and infrastructure to be destroyed. In fact, this is part of South Asian politics. India is dominated by the bad politics while Pakistan is under dictatorship. Ruling elites hardly care for the public opinion, consequently the real victims of this stand off are the poor masses of South Asia.

I am quite sure that the steps Indian government has taken so far are not a prelude to war, rather they appear to be aimed at pressurizing the Pakistani government and also to attract the world’s attention who has its focus on Pakistan ever since the war against Terrorism has started.

India's decision to revoke the train services and call back its High Commissioner to Islamabad is a right move that should have come way before.

I agree with Fardeen’s views expressed in this forum. I agree with Fardeen’s remarks and would like to add that Pakistan is by no way inferior to India, and I hardly hear anybody in India telling that Pakistan is inferior and India is superior. President Musharraf’s remarks after this violent act in India are quite commendable. I think India needs to wait and also appreciate such bold measures without jumping to war.

I think Pakistan should break its all relations with India because India has never accepted Pakistan as an independent country right from the beginning. The current Indian rhetoric may not led this region towards a full scale war because India knows very well that if India attacks Pakistan’s atomic installations then same can be expected from Pakistan.

In my opinion, India is not going to declare war. This is just rhetoric to gain the attention of the world community and to isolate Pakistan who took a courageous step by aligning themselves in the fight against terrorism.

My suggestion to India is to calm down, and try to solve this problem on table instead of creating war hysteria through media.

Terminating bus and train services from Pakistan and calling back its High Commissioner to Islamabad by the Indian government are the tricks they often play. General Pervez Musharraf has rightly said that it’s an arrogant attitude of the Indian government.
FM Endrabi
Lahore, Pakistan

Eliminating terrorist organizations like the LET, Jaish, Hizbul Mujaheedin,  LE-Janghvi, et. al. will be a boon for Pakistan in more ways than it can imagine. These groups will never be able to deliver Kashmir. All they have succeeded in doing is make life miserable for the ordinary people in the valley, weather by their actions or by the actions of the security forces, for which these organizations are ultimately responsible.

Kashmir was very peaceful and fully lived up to is name of "Heaven on Earth", prior to the '90s, when these groups made their appearance. As a kashmiri, I will never  forgive these groups or Pakistan for what they have done to my world.

Another thing that these groups have succeeded in is to malign Pakistan's name, and associate it with terrorism. For the far off investor in say Japan, Europe or the U.S, busy with their own lives, impressions are the only things that matter. The world press is showering Pakistan with rather caustic remarks in spite of Pakistan being a "Frontline State", and we have all heard about the "Accident of Geography" story. All these claims about poverty alleviation will come to a naught if there is no investment, no new jobs for the countless unemployed, or there is massive trade and rapid economic development.

Pakistan counts on China for trade and investment, while ignoring the world's 4th largest economy next doors, where people have the same likes-dislikes, their way of life, their society, their festivals, et. al. just one look at the map says it all, look at how far is China and how close India is [or can be!].

The Military-ISI combine is another factor that has lead to Pakistan's current situation. As long as democratically elected governments are evicted from office at the whims of the GHQ Islamabad, or the ISI guys play havoc with Pakistani society, engineering strikes at certain groups, while supporting the other [never mind their keeping India "Busy with Itself"], Pakistan will never realize its true potential.

The mood in India is to teach the Pakistani Military-ISI combine a lesson,  to perhaps unwind it and leave it a lesser organization than it is. Believe me when I say that this will be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan. I am all for it if it will eliminate the "core groups" responsible for this problem between India and Pakistan.
Fardeen,
Srinagar, India

I think, it is a right decision by India to call the high commissioner and to call off of the train and bus service. This is one of the ways to put pressure on Pakistani government to stop the growth of terrorist organiziations, which is hurting the world community including Pakistani people. How can anybody allow leaders from these organizations to give fanatic statements in public and misguide people? I hope, all the good Pakistani people will raise their voice against terrorism and enable everybody to live peacefully.

Kashmir problem shall get resolved, this problem is not presently helping the common people in both countries other than serving the interests of few politicians on both sides.

Since Kashmir is the root cause of all troubles between India and Pakistan, Can any one provide here any logical explanation why Kashmir should go to Pakistan?

Regarding suspension of bus and train service, why shouldn't India take this action, since these services are one of the major sources for all Pakistani espionage and supported terrorists to gain entrance in India. This move could have taken place much before. So far 50,000 Pakistani who have come to India through these routes, have never gone back to Pakistan.

What do u think they are doing in India? Off course many of them are involved in all kind of destructive activities.

And why shouldn't India recall its HC from Pakistan at the time when Pakistani government is giving support to the group of people who wants to destabilize India. Certainly this is not the friendly act so what is need of maintaining relations with Pakistan and posing that both India and Pakistan are friendly countries.

Guys!! give it a thought.

Without Bollywood, Pakistanis cannot eat, drink and sleep.  Two-nation theory is in the doldrums.   Pakistan day look more Indian day.  Amitabh Bachhan is the hero of Pakistanis.  At one end we advocate two nation, on the other side, the overwhelming Indian culture is the decoration of our bedrooms.  From marriages to independence day, Indian culture is all over above.  What are we proud of?  Islam or India?

India's act of calling back her High Commissioner from Islamabad seems to be an effort to muster international support and put pressure on Pakistan thereby compelling her to take action against LeT and some other organizations blamed by India for activities inside Indian Occupied Kashmir. This action probably has been initiated due to pressure from hawks in Indian government who represent the fundamentalist Hindu groups.

The withdrawal of the Indian High Commissioner does not seem to be a prelude to war. I think India understands that she cannot afford aggression against her nuclear neighbour as it is likely to be too devastating even for her ownself. By mobilizing the military formations, India is trying to internationalize her stance of "cross border terrorism" against Pakistan in full intensity, with the hope that she might be able to draw attention of the world community and win its sympathies.

India is trying to put maximum international pressure on Pakistan; its decision to recall its High Commissioner to Islamabad is part of this policy.  There is no doubt that India has succeeded in its propaganda tactics as it has mustered the support of International Community. In the background Pakistan needs to be extra vigilant on both the diplomatic and propaganda fronts. The chances of real war are bleak at present; however, lot depends on the larger interests of United States in this region and the  reaction from China too.

I believe that India always deployed tactics aimed at to isolate Pakistan in the world community. If any thing happens in India from plague to an ordinary train accident, India always tends to blame on Pakistan.

The region is tantalisingly near full-scale war and I doubt that the armed forces of Pakistan will be capable of dealing with the crisis. Pakistan has, unfortunately, been ruled by the unelected elements on one or other pretext since its inception, and instead of devoting their energies on professional training, they have been indulging in occupying almost all the key posts in the civilian set up.

I hope the sanity will prevail and the war would be avoided which spells disaster for both countries. I hope present military ruler would consider leaving the helm of the affairs of the country to the politicians.

War has never been a solution and will never be. If at all this happens then both countries will be thrown at least ten years back. I think it is time for both sides to device any other method to prove who is better. We do not want bullets and bombs to prove it. If Indians and Pakistanis can live in same buildings, eat on the same tables as expats in U.S., Europe or Middle East then why not in their own region?

India's attempts at cashing in on the present situation regarding the "fight against terrorism" comes as no surprise; Weather Pakistan was involved in the
terrorist activity can only be ascertained through proof, which India does not intend to provide. But as India does not care about evidence, I believe as a nation it is our duty to stand by the adage of "Innocent until proven guilty," and act according to outcome. This as a nation would be the ultimate test of our mettle.

I think as a nation we have not understood the world politics very well. The past fifty years has shown us that Americans always use Pakistan as a staging ground for their own interests. Which always suits the Military rulers of Pakistan. Unfortunately President Musharraf while saving his job has created a big mess by creating two hostile borders for Pakistan.

How things are going to be for the Muslim world, to me, we are watching a uncertain scenario developing specially for Pakistan, Where we will be ripped of from our nuclear capabilities and possibility is that Kashmir issue may eventually get solved by the American-Indian partnership.  What we are watching right now is the first phase of that doctrine, where world media is slowly building thought process of masses, and then in the second phase we will see the actions.

I do not believe that India is preparing for a war. A war is not in Indian interest, why? Because of Pakistan's nuclear deterrent any significant invasion of international border is not a viable option for India, or for that matter, Pakistan too.

Beside an overwhelming numerical and material superiority that India has over Pakistan, India’s chief advantage over Pakistan is logistics. The logistic factor can be brought to bear when the front is wide spread. If the war remains confined to Kashmir, Pakistan can defend it's territory even at present 1:4 imbalance of forces.

War clouds are gathering in the sky over India and Pakistan. The attack on the Indian Parliament was the last straw on the proverbial camel's back. Indians cannot take any more of the kind of terrorism unleashed by the terrorist groups sheltered and nurtured by Pakistani army.

The Pakistani dictator-turned- President may repeat his threats and warnings, but it would be largely for the domestic consumption.

While the American President has already rushed to the side of his frontline partner, behind the scene he is believed to be already twisting the General's arms to rein in the terrorist gangs operating with total protection from the Pakistan army.

Unless Pakistan complies with the Indian demand to hand over the suspected leaders of the Lashkar and Jaish, Indian retribution will surely unfold in the coming days

This is not a prelude to war.  India wants to isolate Pakistan in the international community.  Already by supporting the U.S. in its the fight against terrorism, Pakistan has bounced back into the international arena of respectability, which India could not accept and digest.

Now India wants to project Pakistan in a bad light and undo the patronage it (Pakistan) received by the Western Powers for joining the ongoing fight against terrorism. Withdrawal of bus services and the High Commissioner are only desperate acts by India in this direction. This will hardly serve any Indian interest.

Dozens of times in the past India said “enough is enough”, “their patience has exhausted” as if they shall attack Pakistan within few hours. As they cannot dare to move even an inch into Pakistani soil or across the line of control, this is merely rhetoric.

India will use the power of international diplomacy to force Pakistan to crack down on the two groups who have been active in terrorism.  These actions might cause Musharraf to lose his grip over the many "disgruntled" groups in Pakistan.

India will not initiate any action that cannot be managed.  It is in the best of
Indian interest to use (support and encourage) the rational elements within Pakistan to control such groups.  In fact India might help these "rational" elements with
the support of an international coalition.

Well, let us see where this ends up. This view is from an Indian citizen, and considers all kinds of violence reprehensible and unacceptable.

But, you can stop debating this, you may soon have something else to talk about, like, Is India right in attacking Pakistan or not?

Arshad

Indian decision to call back its High Commissioner to Islamabad appears to be guided by the following aims:
a. To suppress the indigenous freedom movement of the long oppressed Kashmiri
people.
b. To reduce Pakistan to the status of a client state.

To achieve these aims under the prevailing situation, India believes, it is essential that Pakistan be seen in a derogatory light, and what is more demeaning and strategically suicidal for a state than to be seen as a supporter of terrorists. India has staged a number of such acts, including the infamous hijacking episode.

Secondly, we all are aware of the overtures Indian Prime Minister Mr. Vajpayee made to the US, without being asked, in an effort to outflank Pakistan after the tragic events of September 11. That of course would have been the easiest method for India to achieve its designs, as Pakistan was at the risk of being lumped with the likes of the despicable Taliban, and being meted out the same punishment.

True, Pakistan is not Afghanistan, but do we have a deterrent to the kind of punishment, which Afghanistan got? No, we don't, we might have lasted a little longer, but would have lost a lot more, including our nuclear assets, which are a constant thorn in India's side.

Taking advantage of the ongoing war against global terrorism led by US, India is trying to brand Pakistan as a promoter of terrorism and is applying pressure on Pakistan by taking such steps to show the world community that it has a serious concern against Pakistan's so-called involvement in terrorism.

By calling back its High Commissioner from Pakistan and halting train and bus service between the two countries reflects India's frustration as it has been singled out in the present world scenario and is eagerly looking for worlds' attention.

India is hatching conspiracy to malign Pakistan by all means. It has crossed all logical levels and desperately trying to gather attention of International Community, particularly the US, to declare Pakistan a terrorist state.

Though India has threatened Pakistan with war, but it is fully aware of Pakistan's military strength. India is using these tactics to cool down its nation and opposition parties to gather their support.

This is no prelude to a war. India should share evidence with Pakistan for which it linking Pakistan for its alleged involvement in the Parliament attack and only act if the evidence implicates Pakistan.

Tasawar Jaffri

Actually India this decision is aimed at to attract the attention of the world. But such type of policy is extremely naive. India may be justified for its long over due actions. Pakistan's double standards on terrorism are exposed. The latest attack on Indian Parliament shows that Pakistan's role in coalition against terrorism is very superficial and insincere.

Amit Shah

India’s decision seems too hasty, but of course it would be wise enough for Pakistan to show patience, also Indian Policy makers need to understand that Pakistan is not Palestine or Afghanistan.

Rizwanul Haq
London, UK

It can be a prelude to war but there is little possibility of it. India is trying to exert maximum pressure upon Pakistan to stop its political and diplomatic support to Kashmiri freedom fighters.

The movement of troops on the borders is a part of propaganda to convince the outside world that tension exists for which, as India asserts, Pakistan is responsible. It was with this objective in view that the government agencies carried out attack on the parliament building.

Despite pressure from religious political parties, India will not cross the line of control in Kashmir. If it does, it will evoke powerful response from Pakistan.
Because of fierce opposition of Kashmiris to the occupation forces and geographical situation unfavourable to it, India will not commit the folly of military adventure. It would simply mean losing Kashmir. In 1965 war when Jammu was about to fall, Lahore was attacked so as to save Kashmir, the strategy worked, but by this time it may not be easy for India to cross the international border.

The world community is now more convinced that Kashmir is a disputed territory
and any adventure against Pakistan will be considered as an aggression. India will fail to get support even from Russia if there is an aggression against Pakistan. The conclusion is that whatever India is doing now, it will continue doing it but to what end……….?

Calling back High Commissioner from Pakistan does not look an appropriate step from India. It seems like India is merely trying to pressurize Pakistan and nothing else. Even if it's taken as a "prelude" to a war, India need to keep in mind that how Pakistani public will react to such an eventuality.

This may be so as your question is framed. India has all along wanted to take advantage of the situation created after the 11th September. Now this was the kind of opportunity India was keenly waiting to exploit.

Javaid Bashir

India is not digesting the importance of Pakistan being given by the USA, Europe and the Muslim Block in the war against terrorism. India has been desperately trying to show its allies and US that Kashmiri movement is an act of terrorism, for this India has plotted recent flopped plans, the attack of Indian parliament was one of its flopped dramas.

Now, India has decided to recall its High Commissioner to Pakistan as well as suspend train and bus services between the two countries from January 1. This is part of India’s same continuing campaign against Pakistan and to bring the world’s attention to obtain the sympathy, and also pressurise Pakistan to take action against Islamic groups existing in Pakistan.

Syed Atiq ul Hassan,
Sydney,
Australia

I feel that it is a bit early to recall it's high commission by India and the matter had not reached up to this level. But the basic point here is not that India has recalled it's high commission, the point is to understand the gravity of the situation which does not mean anything for Pakistan meant a lot for India like US.

Pakistan decided to join the international collision because it didn't had any option. Either it had to join or it would have been another Afghanistan by now.

The whole world Knows that Lashkar-i-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad operate from  Pakistan. I don't think that even president will have any doubt on this. They are terrorist organizations this is also for sure, so if Pakistan is so called with the war against terrorism then why can't it come down heavily on these irrespective of whether or not it was behind the attack or if there any proof of that.

Hope to get the unbiased view of yours on this.

In India, some years ago there was an outbreak of plague that place and instead accepting of their incompetence, they blamed it on Pakistan. They haven't provided any evidence yet.

Husnain Awan

Even though almost all Pakistanis are unhappy and upset with India over their treatment of Kashmiris in particular and Muslims in general, we should not condone act of barbarism by any terrorist. First two wrong do not make one right. Second what if any goal will this achieve for Pakistan and Kashmiris in short or long run.

Also the "mujahideen" terrorize our own publics promoting religious and sectarian violence against fellow citizens in the name of Islam.

Third their activities directly and indirectly weaken the country socially, politically, economically as well as militarily. If they want to confront a country as powerful as India with its even stronger allies, they need to make sure that Pakistan will be able to teach them an unforgettable lesson in case of overt aggression.

It will be very foolish to believe that God will help those who are their own worst enemies and unwilling to help themselves. I, therefore, think Pakistan government should take strong action against any organization who is terrorizing Pakistanis or any one else, but will be nowhere to be found in case of retaliation by the enemy.

Aqeeb

This is the time when Pakistan should use the same tactics as India. India is trying desperately to hold on Kashmir, but after all abortive attempts now using her dirty politics and smugness. India is just being like Israel. Pakistan should learn from Palestine.

Muhammed Ali

Nobody is blaming Pakistan for the same and Pakistan should not feel that India just want to attack Pakistan. India just want a ban on the terrorist organizations involved in the attack. And now the evidences are before the world community. It’s not the matter whether India is a third world country every sovereign country has the right to protect its democracy. If it comes to war at least India has far better economy then Pakistan.

Chaitanya Saxena

The current Indian Government is based upon the Hindu terrorist organisations such as VHP, RSS, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena. Such a government will not leave any opportunity to harm Muslim world internally and externally. And so it can even impose a war on Pakistan in the name of anti-terrorism, which will help itself to avoid its corruption charges.

Hence Pakistan need to be extremely vigilant and prepare itself to face any emergency and must gather the support globally in case of any attack. Also must give tough reply and not soft offers to India.

Whatever freedom fighters are doing is a reaction against the oppressors. Very difficult to justify it, but at the same time hardly different when the evil states possessing far-reaching weapons of destruction. These states do not hesitate to use such weapons and destroy the infrastructure of the poor nations and killing innocent lives, thus, pushing them back to the Dark Ages.

Neither we are Afghans nor India is USA. If India bears nuclear warheads, we also do have nukes rather more sophisticated than India. So Pakistan must take a firm stand and should not take any action against any organisation at the evil will of India. Since centuries, history has proved that Hindus are a nation of cowards and will never dare to attack Pakistan. However, in case, India agrees for a joint probe and the guilty is proved, only then Pakistan may put some limitations on the terrorists.

In my opinion it is not a prelude to war. This is one more Indian tactics to put international pressure on Pakistan and to cover its human rights violations in Kashmir.

AQ Haji
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

After Pakistan became the front line state in fight against terrorism, an incident in India, which could attract the attention of the world, was expected, and finally the incident of attack on the Indian Parliament came in the lime light. It is a determined fact that what ever happened in India, the responsibility is always fixed by the Indian Government (and also by the Indian media) on Pakistan.

Kashmiris, Sikhs and other suppressed people in different provinces of India are fighting the battle of their independence and right to self-determination. The only matters in which Pakistan cannot be involved by the Indian Government are: earthquakes, floods and heavy rains, as these are acts of God.

It is an evident fact that India is against the existence of Pakistan on the world map, and therefore, leaves no stone unturned to put blame on Pakistan for every thing that happens in India. Similarly, during the visit of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the incident of killing of 37 Sikhs in March 2000 by Indian soldiers were also blamed by the Indian Government on Pakistan.

Now after the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament by some unknown people, the Indian Government want to invade Pakistan and at the same time would like to seek the help of international coalition, who had joined U.S. in fighting the war in Afghanistan against the terrorism. The Indian Government before accusing Pakistan should provide credible proof to the Pakistani Government, so that a through inquiry should be initiated to determine the attack. India should forget that it can cause any further harm to Pakistan, as each and every Pakistani will stand to safe guard the interest of their motherland.

It has now become crystal clear to the international coalition, that Pakistan is against the terrorism and will remain part of the international coalition in fighting back against terrorism. Recalling Indian Ambassador from Pakistan and suspension of bus and train service between the two countries is one of the tactics of the Indian Government to pressurize Pakistani Government and to gain the sympathies of international coalition in favour of India.

These are all repercussions for Pakistan of being the front line state in fighting against terrorism, Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda Group. The attack on the Indian Parliament was pre-planned by the Indian intelligence agencies, as the U.S. war in Afghanistan is in the last leg, after signing of the Bonn accord. India has always been blaming Pakistani government for one reason or another, for indicating the atrocities to the world, which are committed by the Indian soldiers.

India has refused the offer of the U.S. Government to conduct investigations by the FBI and has also refused the offer of Pakistani Government for joint the interrogation of attack on the Indian Parliament. The fairness of Indian Government if evident to the world as India would like continuing to charge Pakistan with one sided story.

14 million Pakistanis are standing at the back of President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf and Pakistani Armed Force to face any consequences, which may come out from Indian aggression. Pakistani Nation is united on one platform and will reply with full force, if India will invade Pakistan. The world should know that India is preparing for a possible war. Recalling its Ambassador from Pakistan and terminating its bus and train service is the beginning of preparation of war by India.
